Yes, one hundred fifty three years ago today, counties in northwest Virginia said goodbye to the Confederacy and joined the Union. I was born in Morgantown when Dad was teaching at WVU. There's a very warm spot in my heart for the Mountain State. Dad did a lot of educational testing in the state, driving here and there, and his stories included a gift of moonshine and a drive around the same tree three times as he descended a hill.
West Virginia used to be a reliably blue state. Now they've decided to embrace fully their victim culture and vote for the party most likely to screw them over, including lying to them about the return of jobs that will only kill them early. They revel in being taken, do my sad, broken, addicted, poverty-stricken, fiercely proud mountain folk. Happy birthday, West Virginia!
